Labeling the Valve offices “progressive” is much like telling a child that the pope is “sort of” Catholic. Fluid work space and a disregard for tiered management define the culture of Valve. Every single desk within Valve’s walls is on wheels, allowing new teams to form around projects as needed. Instead of offices, Valve uses “cabals” that can grow and shrink depending on what’s necessary for the project. This structure, or lack of structure, is a large part of what makes Valve so special. Any time a group of two or more people has an idea, they can move their desks to start their own Cabal in an empty room. As the project comes together, employees can join in and move their desks to that Cabal if they feel they can help out.
This, along with the Gabe Newell interview, makes Valve sound like an amazing place to work.
